5 Quick Dog Training Tips for Perfect Recall

If you have a canine companion, you understand the importance of ensuring they come back when called. Getting the perfect recall from your dog not only keeps them safe but also strengthens the bond between you both and makes your walks a breeze. To help you achieve the ideal recall, here are five top tips that are guaranteed to enhance your dog training experience.

1. Start Early, Stay Consistent

Begin training your dog on recall commands early on in their life. Consistency is key - use the same word or phrase every time you call them. Dogs thrive on routine, and by maintaining consistency in your training, you're setting them up for success!

2. Find What Motivates Your Dog

Some dogs are massive foodies (Labs, I'm looking at you), and some absolutely love playing with toys. Use the thing that motivates your dog the most as a reward for coming back and make sure that you reward every single time, even if they take a while to respond. If you don't reward your dog for coming back, they will learn that it is more rewarding for them to ignore you and continue with whatever they are doing.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice

Reinforce your dog's recall skills through regular practice sessions in different environments. Start in a quiet, familiar space and gradually progress to more distracting environments, such as the park. This will help your dog generalise the behaviour across various settings.

4. Use Your Dog's Daily Food Allowance

If recall is something you are struggling with, use your dog's food as the reward. Take it out with you in a treat pouch and when they return, use fast food chases to make it exciting. Use their food only for recall for one week, and see the difference in their responses. Ditch the bowl and hand feed!

5. Don't Let Them Off Lead Too Early!

Utilise a long line to give your dog more freedom and practice their recall, but don't allow them completely off lead until you are confident that they will come back. If they are completely off lead, you have no way of reaching them and they learn that they don't have to listen which reinforces the behaviour. With a long line, you can reel them in if needed so that you always get a successful recall and they learn that there is no option to ignore.

6. BONUS TIP: Make It Fun!

Your dog won't want to return to you if you shout at them or tell them off for not listening. Even if you are feeling frustrated, try to keep your voice light, use movement away from the dog to entice them to chase you, and praise/reward them heavily for returning. Your dog needs to see returning to you as more fun than the environment.

In conclusion, achieving the perfect recall with your dog requires patience, consistency, and positive training methods. By implementing these quick dog training tips, you can enhance your dog's recall abilities and strengthen the bond you share. Remember, each dog is unique, so tailor your training approach to suit your furry companion's personality and learning style, and KEEP IT FUN!
